They called him Old Yeller. He was a yellow dog and when he opened his mouth it sounded like he was yelling. He was a stray. He had no owners. Old Yellercame to the
log cabin . Papa was going to market with the

It was 600 miles away! He was going to get paid cash. Most people did not have
money after the Civil War.

Little Arliss waved goodbye to his father. He was five years old.
Papa told Travis that he needed to help his mother, and that he was the man

When Travisgot to the cabin, his leg was in bad shape. Mama used hot water to wash out the cut. Traviswent outside and got Jumper the mule. Mama was not happy, but she knew that they needed to help Old Yeller.
As they got closer they saw buzzardsnear where Old Yellerwas laying. Old Yellerwas alive! He was weak and sick. When Travis moved the stump, Old Yellergrowled and showed his fangs. Travisyelled at Old Yeller, and Old Yeller wagged his tail.

Travis and Old Yellerfound the hogs. They were eating prickly pears. The hogswere mad to see Old Yeller. They tried to bite him.
Travis tried to catch a hogand the sand that he was standing on slid down the hill. Travis screamed. One of the hogschased Travis. It hit him with it’s tusk. Travis fell down. Old Yeller saved Travis! The hogsattacked Old Yeller. He howled with pain.
Traviscut his shirt and tied it around his leg to stop the bleeding . Travis walked back to find Old Yeller. Old Yellerwas hurt. He was laying on the ground. Old Yellerwhined as Travis walkedby.
Traviswrapped parts of his shirtaround Old Yeller’s
tummy. Old Yellerwas hurt pretty badly. Travis put him in the shade, and went to get his mother. Travis moved a stumpin front of Old Yeller so that no animal could hurt him.
Chapter 11
When Travisgot to the cabin, his leg was in bad shape. Mama used hot water to wash out the cut. Traviswent outside and got Jumper the mule. Mama was not happy, but she knew that they needed to help Old Yeller.
As they got closer they saw buzzardsnear where Old Yellerwas laying. Old Yellerwas alive! He was weak and sick. When Travis moved the stump, Old Yellergrowled and showed his fangs. Travisyelled at Old Yeller, and Old Yeller wagged his tail.
Mama told Little Arliss to find a lizardnear the stream. Little Arliss was happyto look for the
lizard. Travistook a few hairs our of Jumper’s tail and gave them to Mama. She sewed up Old Yeller’s wounds.
Little Arlissdid not know that Old Yellerwas hurt. He proudly showed his Mama the lizard he found.
Travisand Mama made a sled out of a cowhide, and told Little Arliss that he was playing a game. They told him that Old Yeller was sick and that he needed to hold Old Yellerstay on the sled.
Mama put water into her hatfor Old Yeller to drink. By the time they got homeit was dark. Little Arliss was
asleepand Old Yeller was luckyto be alive.
Chapter 12
Travisand Old Yellerwere sick for a few weeks. Their injuries got infected. Travisgot a fever. Mama had to put cold water on Travis. This helped to keep the fever from getting hotter.
Bud was right about the hot weather. The drought dried the ground. The plants stopped growing.
Mama worked real hard. She had to take care of Travis. Take care of Old Yeller. She had corn to pick. She had wood to cut. She had to milk the cows. Little Arliss was no help to Mama. He was too little to be of any help.
Bud and Lizbeth came to the cabin. They had Old Yeller’s pup with them. Lizbeth gave the puppy to Travis, but he did not want it. He told her that Arliss would like it.
Bud told Mama that he was going to let Lizbeth stay with Travis’s family. Lizbeth was going to help Mama out.
Chapter 13
Lizbeth was very helpful. Both Mama and Traviswere surprised. She carried water, feed the chickens and helped cook the meals.
Lizbeth helped Mama and Little Arliss gather corn.
Then one night, one of the cowswas missing. It wasn’t until morning that Travis and Mama heard her. Mama went outside to go milk Spot, but Spot ran at her. Spot was acting crazy.
Over the next few days they waited and watched Spot. A bull was acting in the same way. They both had rabies. Travistook their lives.
Chapter 14
Mama said that they needed to burn the body of the bull. She did not want any other animal to get sick.
They tied the dead bull to Jumper’s harness. Jumper the mule could not pull the bull. They put a lot of wood on the dead animal and set it on fire.
They kept the fire going to two days and two nights.
Mama and Lizbeth went into the woodswith Old Yeller. They had to
burn Spot’s body.
Traviswatched Little Arliss play with his pup. He thought about his Papa. Papa would be coming home soon.
It was dark and Mama and Lizbeth had not returned. Travis was getting worried.
Chapter 15
Travis fed Little Arliss. Travis heard a noise. It was the sound of dogs
fighting! Mama yelled for Travis help. Travistook dried grass and set it on
Fire , so that he could see.
Old Yeller was in a fight with a sick wolf! Mama and Lizbeth ran to the house. They made sure that the mulewas out of danger.
Travis aimed and pulled the trigger. Old Yellerlay on the ground. He licked Travis’s hand.
Mama told Travisthat Old Yeller had protectedthem from the wolf. On their way back to the cabin, they stopped at the stream.
Mama told Travisit was a good thing for them that Old Yellersaved them. She also said it was a bad thing for Old Yeller because he might get sick too.
Old Yeller was sick. A rabid wolf bitOld Yeller. Mama told Travisthat she would pull the trigger if he couldn’t. Travissaid it was his dog, and that he would be with him in the end.
Travis was sad! Old Yeller died.
Chapter 16
Travis was so sad. He missed Old Yeller. Old Yellerhad been a great dog. Old Yeller saved Little Arliss from the bear. He saved Travis from the hogsand saved Mama and Lizbeth from the rabid wolf. He had been helpful on the farm. He had been a good friend.
Then one night , it started to rain. It seemed to wash away the disease of rabies. Papa came home! Papa was thin like a rain, but he had money in his pocket. The ride to Kansas and from Kansas was good. He gave Travisa horse!
Papa had Travisride the horse. Papa was proud to be able to give Travis such a nice horse. Travis liked the horse, but all he could think of was Old Yeller.
It wasn’t until Travisheard his Mama yelling at the puppy did Travis start to feel better. The puppywas a lot like Old Yeller. The pup liked to stealfood like Old Yeller.
That day, Travisrode his horse . He was proud. He thought about training the pup to hunt with him.
When Travisreturned to the cabinhe saw Arliss playing in the water. He was going to yell at Arliss for playing in the water, but laughed instead.
